Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it one of the most important design hubs in the world.
In 2010, Clerkenwell Design Week was devised to celebrate this extraordinarily creative area, showcasing leading UK and international design brands and companies in a series of showroom events, exhibitions and special installations.
I worked on the original identity for Clerkenwell Design Week back in 2010, and having watched it grow over the years to become one of the UK’s premier design events, I was honoured to be asked to work on its 10th anniversary campaign in 2019.
I decided to concentrate on the CDW acronym by which the event was now affectionately known, and to use it in a fun, illustrative and playful way, highlighting the elements that make Clerkenwell such a unique part of London, and so popular with creative people and businesses.
I created a series of idents that could be used throughout the campaign, featuring illustrations by Matthew Harrison Clough and products by some of the CDW exhibitors. It was all brilliantly brought to life in an animation by Nigel Coan.
CDW has firmly established itself as the UK’s leading independent design festival, and annually attracts the international design community to this small area of London. In 2019, 34,185 attendees and over 300 exhibiting brands flocked to Clerkenwell, and in 2020 it received the award for Best UK Tradeshow between 2,000 - 8,000 sqm from the Association of Event Organisers.
